Weight Loss, Diet Changes Could Significantly Slow Brain Aging

Losing weight and reducing consumption of processed foods, beverages, and sweets could slow brain aging, a recent study has found. Most notably, every 1% of body weight loss corresponded to almost 9 months reduction of brain age for participants.

The study was a smaller one and included 102 participants with obesity. They were divided into three intervention groups that each followed a different diet aimed at weight loss: one involving general healthy eating guidelines, one following the Mediterranean diet, and one following the green Mediterranean diet.

At the end of the study, the researchers determined that it was weight loss that had the greatest effect on brain aging, regardless of which diet participants followed. However, previous studies have linked Mediterranean-type diets to a reduced risk of cognitive impairment.

Some of the main dietary changes included in a Mediterranean diet are limiting or eliminating red and processed meats, eating more plant foods, using olive oil in place of animal fats, and limiting or eliminating sweets and sugary beverages.

Yoga Improves Cancer-Related Fatigue, Lowers Inflammation

Regularly participating in gentle yoga sessions can help reduce fatigue for cancer patients and improve emotional quality of life, according to some new research. It was also found to lower certain inflammatory markers in cancer survivors.

The research encompassed two separate studies involving 675 cancer survivors with an average age of 67 (first study) and 56 (second study). In each study, guided yoga sessions were evaluated versus a placebo activity to evaluate their health effects.

Though both of these studies were short-term ones, the findings on lower inflammation levels after yoga could be particularly significant because previous research has shown that inflammation in cancer survivors is associated with a greater risk of cancer recurrence.

“We wanted to understand how yoga was working, when it improves everything from pain, to insomnia, to fatigue, to quality of life, (to) anxiety,” said Dr. Karen Mustian, lead study author. She added, “The newer data on inflammation was really spectacular because it gives us a place to actually demonstrate this is changing biology.”

With this outstanding nutritional content, eating mangos supports healthy skin and hair and can even help lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Even better, the antioxidants in mango have shown potential for lowering cancer risk. (More)

Beer Makes Humans More Attractive to Mosquitos

With locally acquired malaria cases now being reported in the U.S., you may be interested in how you can keep mosquitoes— the malaria carriers— away. The good news is that the specific type of mosquito that transmits malaria is still very rare in the U.S. and only 7 local malaria cases have been reported. Nevertheless, you might want to consider limiting your beer drinking over the summer, since some older research found that beer consumption increases human attractiveness to malaria mosquitoes. Finding a Purpose Fights Loneliness, Could Boost Longevity

Living long and well is not just about your physical health. In fact, loneliness has been shown to be a significant predictor of cognitive decline and early death and may be just as bad for your health as smoking. Some new research has found that having a sense of purpose in life— especially through simple activities like gardening, volunteering, sports, or continuing to work later in life— can significantly diminish loneliness, perhaps boosting longevity in the process. How to Correctly Read Food Labels to Make Healthier Choices

Nutrition labels are meant to be helpful, but all of the numbers, percentages, and terms are confusing for most consumers. The first step to making healthier food choices is to ignore the marketing words on the front of the package and go straight to the nutrition and ingredient information. Pay special attention to serving size, added sugars, and sodium. When it comes to percentages, 5% or lower is considered “low” and 20% or higher is considered “high”. Though it takes time, be sure to read the ingredient list and be wary of unfamiliar/unpronounceable terms. (More)
